Yogyakarta: An Experience You Won't Find Anywhere Else
Food and Place you only find in Yogyakarta!
Greetings Traveler!
I’ve been living in Yogyakarta for 3 years now, and I will tell you about experiences that you will only find here in the city of scholars! (Because there are so many universities here and an endless wave of students each year.)
If Jakarta is Java’s political and financial capital, then Yogyakarta is its cultural soul. It is home to two of Indonesia's most important archaeological sites, Borobudur and Prambanan, and is the only province still controlled by a sultan.
But you don't have to go to Borobudur to discover how deeply this city is rooted in traditional Javanese arts and culture. Just take a walk down Jalan Malioboro to see what I mean. Many stores sell batik, the traditional Indonesian art of patterned and dyed fabrics, on either side of the street. Continue strolling and you'll come across more of it at Pasar Beringharjo, as well as much finer examples at other art centers and workshops across the city.
EXPERIENCE
Explore the Kraton

Ramayana Ballet
Visit to the Kraton, the royal palace. This living museum showcases Javanese architecture and traditions. Stroll through its opulent halls and serene courtyards as you learn about the city's rich history.
If you happen to be in Yogyakarta on a Saturday, you can see wayang kulit, a traditional shadow puppet show accompanied by a musical group known as gamelan.
If you want something on a greater scale, consider the Ramayana Ballet, a visual portrayal of the ancient Ramayana Saga. It's performed in a variety of locations throughout the city, arguably none more magnificent than Prambanan.
BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

Borobudur Temple
Candi Borobudur in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a breathtaking masterpiece of ancient architecture. The intricate carvings and serene backdrop create a truly captivating experience. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases the grandeur of the past.
Exploring the temple's grounds reveals the rich symbolism and intricate carvings that adorn its walls. The attention to detail and craftsmanship are remarkable, showcasing the incredible skill of the ancient builders. The peaceful ambiance surrounding the temple is incredibly serene and conducive to contemplation.
I highly recommend visiting Candi Borobudur for a unique and enriching experience. While access to the temple's upper levels may be limited, the lower levels still provide a glimpse into its magnificence. The sheer scale and spiritual significance of Candi Borobudur make it a must-see destination. It's a place that will leave you in awe and offer a profound connection to history and spirituality.
CULINARY DELIGHTS

Gudeg Yu Djum
Gudeg, “the sweet jackfruit stew," is, in contrast to western “fast food," the perfect example of Javanese slow and thorough cooking. It takes longer to cook since it needs to drain the coconut milk. I ordered it with the mandatory side dishes: sambel goreng krecek (crisp beef skins fried with chili and peanuts), opor ayam (a sort of chicken curry drenched in coconut milk), telur pindang (seasoned boiled egg), and tahu or tempe bacem (sweet steamed tofu or soybean cake). As a not-so-fan of sweets, I found it interesting to munch on them. I couldn't agree more with people who called Yu Djum a “legend”. (For those of you who like sweet food, I really recommend it!)
